Victoria, British Columbia, is more than just a picturesque postcard destination. Having called this city home for six years, I've discovered the hidden gems and local favourites that make this city truly special. If you're visiting for the first time, here's how to experience Victoria like a local.
Getting There: My first piece of advice is to arrive by Sea. Sure, you can catch a connecting flight from Vancouver and get there quicker, but arriving by ferry is special experience that I highly recommend. It is a spectacular part of the world, and sailing through Active Pass is not something you will forget quickly! Keep an eye out for whales and dolpins too!
A few of my favourite things…
Nature & Gardens: Start your exploration with Butchart Gardens, a world-famous destination that's even more magical in the early morning or late evening when the crowds thin. For a more casual (and free) nature escape, Beacon Hill Park is perfect on a sunny summer day. Be sure to swing by the Beacon Hill Drive-In for some of the best soft-serve ice cream in town.
For a peaceful retreat, the Japanese Gardens at Royal Roads University in Colwood offer a serene experience, especially in the spring when the blossoms are in full bloom. My Canadian husband and I got married here—it's so beautiful and a really special spot. Fans of M-en will recognise the castle here too!
Goldstream Provincial Park is another must-visit. Famous for its fall salmon run, it's a wonderful year-round hiking destination with lush forests and waterfalls.
For Book Lovers: Victoria is a haven for book lovers.. Bolen Books in Hillside Mall is a large, locally loved bookstore with a diverse selection and helpful staff. It’s really quite magical. Downtown, Munro's Books on Government Street is a historical and architectural gem, filled with hand-picked literary treasures.
Strolling the Inner Harbour: The Inner Harbour is pretty special. Walk along the waterfront to admire the iconic Parliament Buildings and the grand Empress Hotel. For a bit of fun, catch one of the adorable little harbour ferries across to Fisherman's Wharf for some fish and chips, or to Lure Restaurant at Ocean Pointe for a scenic lunch with a view of the city skyline.
Chinatown & Beyond: While in downtown, don't miss Fan Tan Alley, Canada's narrowest street, tucked within Victoria's Chinatown. It's lined with quirky shops and a wonderful atmosphere that feels frozen in time.
Haunted Manor Mini Golf on Yates Street: A fun, spooky twist on mini-golf with glow-in-the-dark effects. I know it sounds a bit random, but it was super fun!
Sidney by the Sea: A charming seaside town with bookstores, cafes, and beautiful ocean views just 30 mins from downtown Victoria. This is where my husbands parents live, it’s a pretty little town to wonder through. If you get hungry visit one of the seaside restaurants or pop into Sidney bakery for a donut!
Favourite Walking Trails
There are so many beautiful trails in and around Victoria and locals know the best way to explore Victoria is on foot. Some favorite spots include:
Horth Hill (North Saanich): Quiet, forested trails with ocean views.
Dallas Road: Iconic seaside cliffs, perfect for sunset strolls and if you’re staying in the city.
McKenzie Bight: A forested hike leading to a secluded ocean cove. Such a beautiful and peaceful spot!
Jocelyn Ridge: A rewarding uphill climb with panoramic views. Pack a picnic lunch!
Goldstream Provincial Park: Beyond the salmon run, it offers great hiking year-round. There is a great little information centre there where you can look upstream for bears in season.
Thetis Lake: Pretty lakeside trails, a popular spot in summer for swimming too
Sooke Potholes: It’s a little bit further to get to, but Sooke is a pretty town worth a visit, particularly for the Sooke Potholes. There are lots of trails, and the water is stunning here!
Day Trips from Victoria:
Englishman River Falls & Little Qualicum Falls: Spectacular waterfalls and great hiking trails. The waterfalls are impressive and it’s lovely to walk among the giant cedars. Stop off at the Malahat Skywalk on the way.
Coombs & Parksville: Visit the quirky goats on the roof in Coombs and walk along Parksville Beach. Both are not far from Englishmen River Falls & Little Qualicum falls - the perfect day trip!
Mystic Beach: A rugged West Coast experience, with the chance of wildlife sightings—I've even seen a bear here once!
Salt Spring Island: Take the BC Ferries from Swartz Bay to Fulford Harbour and explore the Salt Spring Markets for local crafts, food, and art.
Best Eats in Victoria:
Wind Cries Mary: Cozy, locally inspired dishes.
Il Terrazzo: Italian fine dining with a romantic atmosphere.
Frankie's Modern Diner: Great for brunch and comfort food.
Lure Restaurant: Scenic harbor views and delicious seafood.
Bard & Banker: A historic pub with live music and hearty meals.
Victoria is a city best savored slowly, with time spent wandering through parks, sipping coffee by the sea, and enjoying its natural beauty. Whether you're here for a weekend or longer, embracing these local experiences will make your trip unforgettable.
Enjoy my second home town!
